Hi there, I'm Tom.
I work as a writer/narrative designer of games, and direct for theatre and VR.
I work as a freelance narrative-whisperer - wrangling words, forging arcs and bending genres on the great Dialogue Plains (yeehaw!).
I hold an MA (Distinction) in Games Design from UAL, with a research focus on interactive dialogue and player role. While studying for my Masters degree I worked as the writer on Among Trees, and had my writing featured in Inkle's Pendragon! Get in touch if you'd like a sample of my work, or check out my itch.io page to see my latest tinkerings.
Over the past decade I have directed acclaimed productions of new plays by British and Irish writers. My work has toured internationally and won multiple awards, including two Stage Edinburgh Awards, and in 2016 I was invited to train on the National Theatre's Directors Course. I am the Associate Director of One Duck, and am represented by Emily Wraith at Berlin Associates.
In the last two years I have begun translating my theatrical experience into directing for VR.
So far I have collaborated with universities, creative directors, writers and experience designers on two immersive educational experiences, and I’m beyond excited to continue this journey. Goggles on!
Since 2013, myself and Pat Ashe have been curating and producing Beta Public, London's only night of theatre and video games. We have presented the work of over 100 artists and game developers, curated work for the V&A's Friday Lates, and our incredible commissioned event posters featured in the exhibition Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt.
While pursuing my Masters in Games Design, I focused my research on dialogue and narrative. Two pieces - my thesis, on designing dialogue through the lenses of time, space and interface, and a short essay applying Stanislavskian acting techniques to narrative card games - are available to read here:
I am always available for freelance script reading, editing work and story consultancy.
With over five years' experience consulting and leading on script development, I have developed work at Audible, the National Theatre Studio and Bush Theatre. I also assess script submissions for the National Theatre, and work as Hampstead Theatre's Senior Reader.
I am currently an Associate Lecturer in Games Design at the University of Bedfordshire.
I have also trained actors in improvisation, Shakespearean verse, and approaches to new writing, as well as teaching university classes on Playwriting and Classical Drama. Past employers have included: Lir Academy, Richmond University, and City University London.
Improv, public speaking, revisionist anthropology for kids - you name it, I've run a workshop on it!
I have engaged with classrooms, workplaces and community groups for over 30 partners, including: Young Vic, National Maritime Museum, and Battersea Arts Centre. If you have an educational project you'd like to talk about, do get in touch.
